"With our modern take on Barney, we hope to inspire the next generation to listen, care, and dream big. "In creating the new series, it was important to us that we properly reflect the world that kids today live in so that the series can deliver meaningful lessons about navigating it," said Fred Soulie, the SVP and general manager of Mattel Television. Created for preschool kids, the series will feature the ubiquitous purple dinosaur and friends through music-filled adventures "centered on love, community and encouragement." Mattel said it will relaunch Barney to a new generation with a new animated series, set to debut globally in 2024. (The Lyons Group) PBS TV series Barney & Friends. And it is already on the shelves.Barney, the purple dinosaur, in scene fr. Twinken is the plug-ugliest stuffed thing you will ever find yourself besieging toy stores for. For Timothy, Twinken was also the best part. In the lobby, I stop to talk to Sandy and Colin Grant, there with their kids, Timothy, 3, and Catherine, 2. Rachel says her favorite part was watching the egg change color for Ada it was Twinken, the hatchling that finally emerges from the shell. When it's over, the children in the audience applaud the way adults do at the Mechanic Theatre and then file out as quietly as they came in. Rachel is on the edge of her (booster) seat, as the egg lands over and over again just out of the children's reach. Adam and Hallie are both spellbound, at least for the first hour. A few times, Ada asks her mother a question about the machinations of the plot. If you're happy and you know it - well, you know what to do.Įvery now and again, in the darkened theater, you can hear a murmur - nothing loud, though. Barney sings "Twinkle, twinkle, little star," and the singing starts in the seats even before he asks for participation. Every now and then the action on the screen slows for a little action from the audience: Baby Bop needs help finding her "blankey," and the kids in the theater point - over there. There is also a baby of no particular gender and for no dramatic purpose.Ĭody becomes a convert to Barneyphilia early on you'd be a believer too if you'd snatched up your sister's favorite toy, dumped it in the bathtub and then felt the Earth move as the big guy himself stepped out and promised you an adventure.Īnd here it is: An enormous egg falls out of the sky and slides under a pail in the barn, where it shakes, rattles and I expected a cute little Jurassic raptor to hatch out, but the plot owes more to Rube Goldberg than Steven Spielberg, as the egg leads the kids on a wild-goose chase through a parade, a fancy French restaurant, a circus and a hot-air-balloon ascension. There's a huge, sprawling farmhouse, a barn with lots of terrific things to swing on, dangle from and slide down, and enough animals for a rousing few choruses of "Old MacDonald." No crops that I can see, though. Where the TV watcher sees a handful of kids and one or two eccentric adults, the movie has a cast of what looks like hundreds - marching, dancing, dining, juggling among them are Cirque du Soleil performers. The plot is a whole lot more complicated than anything we've seen at home. Little mouths stuffed with thumbs or pacifiers stop moving even the sucking reflex seems to be stilled for a while. But then, as the story moves out of the setup phase - a mom and dad taking their brood to Grandma and Grandpa's farm for a week - and the little purple toy appears, there is silence. And sure enough, the first tentative squawk goes up while the credits are rolling. I've been to kiddie flicks before, mostly Disneys, and I was braced for the noise, the screaming as the lights go down, the seat-bouncing.
